Each year the Hauraki Māori Trust Board through the Pare Hauraki Fishing Trust offer $200,000 in Education Grants to assist Iwi members studying at tertiary institutions.

Past Education Grant Recipients

Te Puna Moanaroa

Of Ngāti Pūkenga, Ngāti Maru, Ngāti Kahungunu and Waikato, Te Puna received an education grant studying towards her Master of Business Administration (MBA), at Waikato-Tainui College for Research and Development. She was the first student at Waikato-Tainui College to submit her MBA Dissertation in Te Reo Māori. The focus of her research was to investigate strategies for the sustainability of Te Whare Kōrero Tāhūhū o Hauraki who is concerned with the protection of Hauraki reo and tikanga.

Te Awhi Tuhipa Allen-Davis

Of Ngāti Hei, Te Awhi Tuhipa Allen-Davis graduated with a Bachelor of Business, Retail Management from Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa (Massey University) in Auckland. While at high school, Te Awhi secured a Sir Stephen Tindall Foundation scholarship to study at Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa. Te Awhi has put her skills to use for her Iwi and conservation creating an online business selling luxury rongoā skincare with a percentage of every purchase going to the development of Ohinau Island, a pest-free home to endangered native species

Apanui Skipper

Of Ngāti Tamaterā, Ngāti Hako, Ngāti Paoa, Ngāti Maru and Ngāti Porou, Te Whānau-a-Apanui, Apanui was supported to complete his PhD at the University of Waikato. His PhD topic explores Maori environmental knowledge, expertise and cultural understandings of weather and climate including what currently exists within Hauraki, Te Whānau-a-Apanui, and Ngai Tahu iwi. Apanui worked for NIWA within its Maori environmental unit – Te Kuwaha for 16 years and is now with the Department of Conservation as Pou Tairangahau for the Hauraki and Waikato regions.

Martin Mikaere

Of Ngāti Pukenga, Martin received an education grant to assist with his studies in the medical field. Martin completed a Bachelor of Nursing and spent the next six years working in Emergency Departments in New Zealand, Australia and America before returning home to study to become a doctor. Six years later Martin graduated from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBCHB). Martin is currently working for Te Korowai Hauora o Hauraki in Paeroa as the General Practitioner Registrar and continues to excel in his field.

Miria Royal

Of Ngāti Tamaterā, Miria received an Education Grant for her studies at Victoria University in Wellington. Miria graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) majoring in Electronics and computer systems and returned to study part-time at the University of Auckland to complete a Post-Graduate Diploma in Business, specialising in Māori Development. Miria has built her career to a senior level at Vodafone as a Transformation Workstream owner.
